Description:

Zoltán Kodály believed that children learn music best when drawing on folk tunes from their own ethnic and cultural heritage–and he was right! The difficulty today is that the world has grown smaller, and your classroom most likely represents many diverse cultural and ethnic experiences and backgrounds. When you teach a music curriculum designed from a Western, Euro-American perspective, even though it may include “World Music” as a subtopic, you are unfortunately leaving behind a large portion of your students. Only by teaching music through a genuinely multicultural lens will your students achieve equity in their musical learning.

The national music standards are divided into four domains: Creating, Performing, Responding, and Connecting. Of these four domains, only the Creating and Performing standards follow a sequential arc, while Responding and Connecting standards each stand alone. All Around This World approaches these domains so that for each academic year, Creating and Performing standards unfold across the three “trimesters” to conclude near the end of the year, while Connecting and Responding standards occur throughout the year. Student creative projects as well as “stage ready” performances are supported (though not required) by the design of the lessons.

All Around This World draws on a full repertoire of music from each of nine regions of the world. Each academic year uses three of these regions, resulting in a “trimester” division of material. Each grade level curriculum is available in all of these “trimester” sets of three, effectively meaning there are three full curricula available for use. For example, Year A includes Latin America, Africa, and Central/South Asia. These sets of 3 regional “trimesters” can be taught in such a way that all grade levels are working from the same regional repertoire sets, enabling teachers to coordinate multi-grade concerts in which all grades have learned the same songs. The student experience flows smoothly into new songs and materials each year, and ensures that students have made a full musical trip around the world in a three-year span.
