LOVING THE LINDY HOP

Swing dancing's most stupendous move is "the Lindy Hop." Named after uber-famous pilot Charles Lindbergh, who "hopped" across the Atlantic ocean in 1927, the Hop is frantic and frenzied and FUN, full of frenetic fancy footwork and, when in the hands (and feet) of the best, lots of flailing and flapping and, almost literally, flying around the ballroom. The nation caught on to the move throughout the 1930s and ‘40s...a distraction from the darkness.

Based out of Harlem's Savoy Ballroom, Whitey's Lindy Hoppers were the best of the best. When moviemakers sought dancers to portray the fictitious "Harlem Congaroos" in the swing dance film (based on the swing dance Broadway musical) Hellzapoppin’, Whitey's troupe literally stepped up.
