We learn about one of the most fundamental, and enjoyable, cultural elements of the country of Georgia in the Caucasus Mountains – a celebratory feast, the Supra. Our partners, Geogrian students Iva Satoru and Tatuli Qavtaradze, show us the way.
To celebrate the good times, and to find strength in community through the bad, Georgians gather at a feast called a Supra where they sit around a long, wooden table, eat voluminously, make toasts to long life and the Georgian nation, and sing sing sing. There is traditionally a toastmaster (tamada) who leads the festivities and a meal which will definitely include khachapuri (cheese-filled bread), and usually mtsvadi (rilled pork or veal on a stick and Khinkali (meat dumplings). Georgia's most distinct musical form is called the Table Song, a polyphonic/many-voiced form of music sung without instruments.
