Our partner, Haitian dancer/choreographer Dieufel Lamisere, founder and artistic director of HaitiDansCo, introduces us to moves we can use to dance to Rara, a rousing genre of music from Haiti that celebrates life.
Haitian rara music is very much music of the street. Rara bands wielding drums, maracas, multiple hand percussion instruments and long bamboo trumpets called Vaksen take to Haiti's streets in raucous public processions. Rara is associated with Haiti's history of African and Afro-Creole slavery, during which enslaved Haitians would sometimes be able to parade on Easter Sunday.
In All Around This World class we acknowledge Haiti's many struggles, and join Haitians to embrace Rara in all its glory, parading around the room to celebrate all of the best parts of life.
